SARAJEVO STUDY VISIT
______________________

ELSA Oxford is currently organising a Study Visit to
Sarajevo!!

DATES

ELSA Sarajevo's visit to Oxford: 7-14 May 2001

ELSA Oxford's visit to Sarajevo: 28 May- 4 June 2025

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

To give Bosnian law students an insight into the workings of the UK's legal and political systems. To provide English law students with an understanding of Balkan history and politics.

The democratic structure of Bosnia-Herzegovina, as laid down in the Dayton Agreement of 1995, is still in its infancy. We believe that firsthand experience of a well-established democracy would be invaluable to the Bosnian students. For many of them, divisions caused by war and political instability will be fresh in their memories. As they will make up the legal and civil service professions of the future in Bosnia, an understanding of English institutions and the rule of law in the UK will no doubt assist them in bringing stability to their own country.

At the same time, we believe it to be equally important for English law students to gain an understanding of the challenges and difficulties which their Eastern European neighbours are facing. It will help them identify the strengths, but also possible flaws of their own legal and political system. Hopefully, the exchange with Bosnian students will also assist them in gaining the relevant experience and appreciation of national and cultural differences which will help them build an ever-closer Europe in the future.

To foster a long-term partnership between law students in Oxford and Sarajevo.

We believe that the best chance for encouraging mutual respect between Western and Eastern Europe lies in establishing long term friendships and bonds that will develop between our respective organisations in the years to come. In strengthening the ELSA network, it will lead to a continued collaboration and exchange of ideas in the future.
By attempting to involve the local communities (through sponsorships, receptions and Press coverage), we are hoping that the exchange will bring benefits to a much wider circle of people than just the law students involved.
